JCP Approves Oracle-Led Data Mining Specification, JSR-73

"JSR 73 is an important step in enabling production data mining," said Oracle's VP Jacek Myczkowski yesterday.

Myczkowski, who is Oracle's vice president of Data Mining Technologies and Life Sciences, was speaking on the occasion of the unanimous approval, by the Executive Committee of the Java Community Process, of Java Specification Request (JSR) 73, the industry's first Java Data Mining specification designed specifically to incorporate data mining into any application that requires advanced analytics.

"Widespread adoption of Java Data Mining will bring data mining to the masses because developers can learn one API and embed analytics in any application, regardless of vendor," Myczkowski added.

In addition to enabling developers to reduce the time and cost of development, the new Java API and Web services standard allows developers to leverage other data mining standards such as the DMG's Predictive Model Markup Language, OMG's Common Warehouse Metadata, and ISO's Structured Query Language Multimedia to ease application development and deployment.

The JSR 73 specification enables interoperability among different data mining systems while enabling developers to write data mining into applications while eliminating the risk of vendor lock-in.

Prior to the creation of JSR 73, developers used proprietary APIs and had to learn disparate interfaces for each development language, e.g. C or Java. JSR 73 includes a representative set of functions and algorithms for classification, regression, association, clustering, and attribute importance. Additionally, the API is designed for novice and expert level engagement, including a common framework for expanding the API.

Development of JSR 73 began in July 2000 and has been available to the public for review since October 2002. Oracle led development of this specification with support from leading analytics, business intelligence, and data warehousing system vendors including Fair Isaac, Hyperion, KXEN, and SPSS Inc., among others. Oracle's Mark Hornick, senior manager of Data Mining Development, serves as the specification lead for JSR 73.
